Reading Topographic Maps

Learn how to read the shape of the Earth! Discover how flat maps can show mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs using contour lines.

What are Contour Lines?

Contour lines are imaginary lines that connect points of equal elevation. They allow us to represent a 3-dimensional landscape on a 2-dimensional flat map.

The Golden Rule

Every point on a single contour line is at the exact same height above sea level. If you walked along a contour line, you would never go up or down!
